At Mosaic Health and Fitness, Gary Bates helps clients relieve chronic pain using a technique known as dry needling.
Dry needling has proven to be very effective to treat pain and diminish muscle tightness.
What is Dry Needling?
Dry needling has a few names. Some practitioners call it trigger point dry needling, others refer to is as intramuscular stimulation. All these names are referring to the same direct treatment of myofascial pain.
This therapeutic healing technique that is designed to alleviate tightness, aches and pain in muscles, by inserting a needle directly into established pressure points, known as trigger points.
Trigger Points
A myofascial trigger point is a tender, sensitive area in the body that suffers from increased muscle stiffness and tenderness and decreased in range of motion. These are the hard knots and tightness we feel in our muscles.
How Does Dry Needling Work?
Dry needling is designed to relieve the tension, tightness and pressure in the trigger points in our muscles.
In this invasive but mostly pain free procedure, a thin dry needle is inserted into the skin and muscle directly at a myofascial trigger point.
Dry needling works by releasing, or relaxing, those tight and knotted muscles. The release created by the dry needle stimulates the muscle and allows for greater movement and range of motion, restoring flexibility and range of stretch.
In other words, when the dry needle is inserted in a trigger point, the tension and pain that is being held in the muscle dissipates, and the muscle and surrounding muscle return to their normal size.
When muscles are back and working as they should, we move better, and our blood flow improves.
The Benefits of Dry Needling
Dry needling is a highly effective healing technique that can help you move better by treating musculoskeletal related concerns.
As a trained and qualified health practitioner, Gary Bates will usually administer dry needling with other non-invasive physical therapies. This allows clients to obtain maximum benefit from the muscle release of dry needling and break the pain cycle.
Dry needling is often beneficial for managing and treating:
- sporting injuries
- myofascial pain
- muscle pain in the arms, legs, lower back and neck area
- muscle spasms
- migraine and tension headaches
- chronic pain
What Side Effects Can I Expect After the Treatment?
Everyone responds differently to physical treatments such as dry needling. Mild soreness, just like muscle soreness, is a common side effect of dry needling.
Soreness can last between a few hours up to a couple of days and may be relieved by applying heat or ice or gentle stretches. It is important to listen to your body as you take the time to recuperate.
You can also be assured that dry needling is very safe. At Mosaic Health and Fitness, all dry needling is undertaken in accordance with Australian clinical standards. Only sterile, disposable needles are used. These are discarded at the end of the therapy session.
